Sleepless in Atlanta: Why Breach Response Takes So Long

The most recent mega-breach of 2014 appears to have been suffered by home improvement giant The Home Depot. On September 2, 2014, über security reporter Brian Krebs first broke the story that The Home Depot suffered a major breach of customer financial data. The story was immediately front-page material with every major news outlet, with most noting the similarities with last year’s Target breach. It is believed the breach started in April of 2014 and continued unabated until Krebs’ story broke – over five months – with detection ostensibly occurring only when customer credit data was discovered being sold on the black market.
